Washington, D.C. – September 20, 2024 – Former U.S. Senator John Breaux (D-LA), senior advisor for Saving America’s Family Enterprises (SAFE), issued the following statement in response to The Washington Post reporting that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) whistleblower program was successful in recovering $263 million from a single wealthy tax-evader.
“This is further proof that enforcing the tax code works and is the most effective way to ensure that the wealthy pay their fair share. Yet policymakers continue to propose ideas that are unworkable for the IRS—like guess taxes on income that hasn’t been realized. In this moment, the path forward is not more complexity or uncertainty in the tax code. Our focus should remain on initiatives that promote fairness and generate significant revenue to close the tax gap, rather than experimenting with unproven tax schemes that would upend the economy.”
